What is portrait photography?

The term ‘portrait photography’ refers to photographs taken of people that aren’t posed but rather capture their natural expressions and emotions. It’s not about making people look perfect but rather capturing their individuality.

With this in mind, it should be noted that there isn’t one correct way to take a portrait as each person has their own style. But here are a few things to consider when planning your portrait session.

What makes a good portrait?

A good portrait should be honest, showing who the subject really is. They should be comfortable with the fact that they are being photographed which is why having someone like a friend or family member help you out with a photo shoot is always beneficial.

How does it work in the studio and on location?

When you go to a portrait photography studio, you’ll usually find them set up with a white background and lots of lighting equipment such as softboxes and reflectors. The idea is to use these lights to light up the model’s face so they don’t look flat and lifeless.

As far as location shoots go, this may vary depending on where you live. In New York City, for instance, it’s possible to hire a studio space to photograph portraits in a variety of locations. Or you could rent a location or even a house.

What are the different types of portraits?

Most portrait photographers will typically offer two main categories of service – studio portraits and location portraits.

Studio portraits tend to be the most popular type of portrait photography because of the high level of control that photographers can exert over their subjects. However, they can sometimes be quite expensive due to the setup costs involved.

Location portraits are generally cheaper than studio portraits as they only require a camera and tripod. Most photographers will recommend hiring a professional model for these shoots as they will know how to pose their clients properly and make sure the images come out well.

Can you do your own hair and makeup for a portrait shoot?

Yes, but it depends on the amount of time you have available. If you have a lot of time, you could probably manage to create your own hairstyle and makeup at home. But if you don’t have much time then you might want to hire a stylist or makeup artist to help you out.

Also, keep in mind that the majority of professionals will charge extra for their services as they will have to spend time preparing your hair and makeup. So it’s best to budget accordingly.

Post-production and retouching

Once you’ve got your photos back from the studio, you’ll notice that they’ve been edited and retouched in post-processing software. We may even use retouching tools to fix blemishes and add highlights and shadows.  These tools can be used to improve skin tone, remove wrinkles, smooth out imperfections, brighten eyes and adjust colors.

Post-production and retouching is also necessary in order to reduce noise levels and remove unwanted objects from the image.
